Layer de la Haye is an ancient settlement, going back to Saxon times, but today we are a vibrant community of around 1,800 people.

Colchester is 1.5 miles to the north of us, along the B1026. We are separated from the town by a strip of unspoilt countryside which includes a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the Roman River valley.

Just south of the village is the Abberton Reservoir. This is the fourth largest reservoir in England and is also a SSSI and a Ramsar site designated an internationally important wetland.

We have four small retail outlets in the village, a Primary School, a doctors’ surgery, two pubs, the church and a village hall. We have a large Recreation Field, two village greens and a multisports court. We have more than a dozen busy and thriving village organisations serving all ages and providing sport, entertainment and opportunities to socialise.

There is also a Facebook page ( and a Parish Network email system (contact that keep residents informed of events and activities.
